Many of them pop left and right and disappear within a year. :( While administering www.easysubmits.com I found 50% of the directories go dead within a first year. I wonder if directory owners have more expectations when they start one up. This is why I usually submit only to the ones that been out for at least a year. P.S. Decided to start blogging today, let me know what you think of a theme, still working on it a bit. :) Seems that the number of directories is growing too. With thouthands pages on each directory it is pretty hard to see the incoming link from one but from my research, after submitting to about 700 web directories I got about 10 backlinks showing on google, so it still works to an extent. I have sites which have nothing but directory backlinks to them....works well for sure...maybe for bigger sites and competitive'r niches you need more backlinks from other types. It works perfectly. Just make sure to submit only in quality directories and no more than 100 or 200. Submission in more directories could raise "red flag" and bring many low quality links.
