Get more Visitors by changing your Page Titles

The title of a web page is very important. It is an important factor to get a high ranking in the search engines and it is the first thing your visitors will see when they find your website in the search results. Depending on the kind of traffic you want to attract, you should use different title formats on your pages:

News titles (bad for SEO)

These kind of titles are often used by bloggers and news websites. These titles usually don’t contain relevant keywords and they don’t look attractive in the search results.

Shopping titles (good for SEO)

These titles usually contain a product or brand name that is used by visitors. If these titles also contain a call to action, you can get targeted visitors. Examples are titles with for instance a laptop brand in it with a cheap price also included in the title.

Information titles (good for SEO)

Information titles won’t attract buyers but visitors who are looking for information about a topic. For example a title with how to lose weight in 1 month. These titles are good because they will attract visitors over a long time period. People are always looking for ‘how to’ articles and solutions to their problems. You will probably get long term, constant traffic with these pages.

How to change your current web page titles

Good titles can make a huge difference in the number of visitors that your website gets. For that reason, you should check the titles of all your pages:

  • Make sure your titles are descriptive. It should be clear what to expect on a page
  • Add a call to action in your title (if possible)
  • Put the most important information in front of the title. Some search engines might shorten the title in search result pages and visitors might not see the complete text
  • Avoid your company name in your title (if you are not a major brand)
  • Do not use the same title for all of your pages

Visitors judge search results by page titles. If you want to get as many visitors as possible, you should develop engaging titles for all pages on your site.

Good post. Make sure to avoid keyword stuffing in the title as well. Got penalized for duplicating title once. :)

Ah yep, keyword stuffing in titles is bad to! It shouldn’t look spammy :)

Great post! You have a lot of search engine traffic, I think. What’s your bounce rate, if you don’t mind sharing - and what would you say is an acceptable bounce rate for a blog?

This graph is from another site of me, the bounce rate is at 7%, which I find is low :) create ways to get good traffic, this way the bounce rate will be low..
